You can feel it, right? It feels & seems urgent, right? But where is the strategy behind it all? Strategy tells you what you should be doing, but also what you should not be doing. Is it helping your strategic mission?
And is it really urgent?
Ephemeral is exciting… because it is NOW, it’s in the moment, maybe it even feels like “freedom”. Yet, will it get you somewhere important tomorrow?
Today matters of course, but what if it’s at the expense of your tomorrow?
What you do today matters far less today than it does into tomorrow & further into the future.
What you do now can echo in eternity.
Patience is a virtue.
And so is intolerance. Just not in the way that we typically know it.
The more intolerant you become of short term gratification the more results you will harvest in the future.
You’re not sacrificing tomorrow for today.
Why would you put your future self at risk?
Let me say that again - what you do today matters far less today than it does into tomorrow & further into the future.
Today matters of course. Not to what happens today, not to the NOW, but to your future self, your future of your business.
We’re living on dopamine, instead of wisdom. Perhaps “NOW” is like crack for the masses of businesses out there to get the next hit of today, of "NOW", yet paradoxically, at the expense of tomorrow.
But, would you put your future self at risk if you knew what was really happening? I’d guess probably not. I know I wouldn’t.
It’s the thinking & doing that prepares peak athletes for the Olympic podium; it’s the same thing in what prepares businesses for their certain future in uncertain times. They prepare and focus on that one thing that will help them win. Like them, you can win too...
Despite the odds;
despite the competitors;
despite the NOW.
Strategy is not about crystal ball gazing about the possibilities of a certain future either, it’s about seeing the possibilities with “radar” - knowing what is important to see, but also knowing that it’s not predicting the future, but rather seeing through the fog, the cloud, the confusion, the storms, the chaos. We don’t need a 10 year plan that lists every step along the way - as yes, that is not an exciting way to run a business and as we all know, highly unlikely that it will ever happen, but we need something to be able to focus and see us through the unlikely, the unplanned, the risks of the NOW.
We need a strategic radar to show us what is NOW, but that will help us see and become aware of the NEXT, NOWs. What’s getting in your way of winning?
Strategy is not seeing the future or “knowing” what will happen in the future, but building a foundation, an architecture, and showing how you can win, and what obstacles and competition will get in the way.
Not all possibilities are good ones, either. Would you agree?
