The Business Top Gun's Playbook: Harnessing Speed of Strategy and Strategic Direction for Navigation for Impact

What’s more important strategically- speed or direction in your business?

If you'd ask Tom Cruise/Maverick in Top Gun, what do you think he'd say?

It’s so much about finding our balance as Gary Vaynerchuk points out in a recent post. Do you agree with how I responded?

How do you find more strategic focus and create more impact?

Do we really know what this means to "balance" things in business?

Yes, this is kind of obvious, but do we really know what this means to "balance" things in business? And more importantly, how and what exactly we’re supposed to be balancing? Is it just a vapid expression or is there really something BEHIND this expression?

It's like a see-saw, but for strategic thinking

This is what gives us leverage to act. It’s like forces on a fulcrum. Remember those days in primary school with a see-saw? It only works if you have a balance beam and a fulcrum to allow you to balance.

Here's what I mean:

A balance beam for speed vs direction in business

Strategy is finding and discovering the things you'll need to balance, and the fulcrum to leverage them

We can only balance once we articulate what we are trying to balance. We can only leverage these factors once we have identified and articulated this in the form of a fulcrum. You can't balance anything if you don't know what you're trying to balance, right? We need all of the parts of the 'see-saw' to actually make them work, together, otherwise it all just falls apart.

What do we need to create a strategic fulcrum that leverages what's important?

We need

  1. Identify what we are trying to balance
  2. Identify the factors (the fulcrum) that gives you leverage
  3. Use these in your strategic models

Do you remember what you used to do with a See-Saw? I do.

The fun part? Once you understand the "rules" of a good balance, you can fling your good friend off the other end of the see-saw. Right? 😂😂😂

Unfortunately, we often don’t know exactly what we’re trying to balance so we waste our time and resources almost aimlessly.

Want more focus with your business strategy? You need to understand your fulcrum.

Focus comes from knowing what to balance and how to leverage these factors on a fulcrum.

Do you agree?

What are you trying to leverage strategically and do you have a fulcrum to help you leverage it and find your strategic focus?

What are you trying to balance? What are you trying to leverage and do you have a fulcrum to help you?

Tell me what you think is more important - in this blog post, or on my post.
